Katina has now completed the half marathon at the Auckland marathon two years in a row. In 2014, she finished in a time of 2:31:02 and raised $1,195. So combined over the two years (2013 and 2014) – she raised $3,032.
In 2009, Katina lost her brother Adam to suicide. At the time, she was 41 weeks pregnant and unable to fly out to Canada to attend his funeral.
“As more information came out, it added to my heartbreak,” she says. “I’m his big sister and I wasn't there to help him. I didn't know what he was going through.”
Katina, of Palmerston North, came across the MHF’s website and Facebook page while looking for information for families coping with this type of grief.
She saw a Facebook post calling on people to apply for a Golden Charity entry to fundraise for the MHF in the Auckland Marathon and jumped at the chance.
“I've wanted to do something positive after this long journey grieving for Adam, but I didn't know what. When I found out I was accepted, I was thrilled and then felt nervous and excited. I thought, ‘can I actually do this’?”
